Parish Walking Pilgrimage to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) 12 - 14 June 2009 The walk of just over 30 miles follows St. Oswald's Way, from Alnmouth to Lindisfarne, going through Craster and Bamburgh, and will take place over the weekend of the 12th -14th June this year, travelling up via train on the evening of the 11th June. Lindisfarne is associated with the reintroduction of Christianity into England in the 7th Century. St. Oswald, King of Northumbria, invited the Irish monks based in Iona to establish a monastery and set up a mission to the region. St. Aidan was associated with a practical and humble ministry and had remarkable influence in not only bringing Christianity to the region, but also training boys as practical missionaries who later went out over much of England to spread the Gospel. St. Cuthbert, for many an inspirational saint, was elected Bishop of Lindisfarne not many years after Aidan's death. Lindisfarne is also famous for its skill in Christian art of which the Lindisfarne Gospels are the most beautiful surviving example. It is still a popular pilgrimage site today. One of the high-points will be crossing the causeway to the island when the tide is out. The meeting will suggest possible travel and accommodation arrangements and give a cost estimate. The first meeting will identify interest in the pilgrimage and help plan the weekend. Please note places may be limited. If you are interested and would like to find out more, please come to the meeting on Tuesday. If you are unable to make the meeting but would like to be kept informed please contact Chris Brookes, ideally by email on and put 'Lindisfarne Pilgrimage' in the subject or call 020 8404 3756 if you don't have access to email.
